Purpose of Education

What is the purpose of education? There are many answers to this question. To help children gain the skills they need to be productive members of society. To increase our strength as a nation. To learn. To evolve. I knew my answer after reading the response of Lilianna Salcedo when she was in the 10th grade. In my opinion, the purpose of education is to further the human race. Lately, I have been studying Jerome Freiberg’s work on person centered classrooms.

Equity v. Equality

I am interested in education because I want to create equitable opportunities. This is different from equal opportunities.

In an equal opportunity, everyone has the same access. Everyone has the same amount of time to take a test. Everyone has the same breakfast options.

In an equitable opportunity, everyone has the tools they need for success. Everyone has the amount of time they need to take a test. Some may need more time than others in order for the opportunity to be equitable. Some may need the questions read to them in order to have an equitable chance to answer the math question correctly. Everyone has their financial needs met to eat breakfast. This means for some, breakfast is funded through family members, for others through outside sources.
